How to read this comparison
Representative species values
PanTHERIA consolidates species-level values from multiple references. Sex, age, subspecies, and individual condition can produce substantial variation.
Head-body length excludes the tail
Head-body length is the length from the head to the base of the tail. A giraffe’s standing height and a bear’s body length are therefore not being mixed.
Why use a logarithmic scale?
The Asian elephant weighs over two thousand times the European rabbit in this dataset. Log scale keeps that range while making smaller mammals visible.
Taxonomy and update date
Names follow the Wilson & Reeder 2005 taxonomy used by PanTHERIA 1.0. These traits are relatively stable, but source estimates and taxonomy can be revised.

Length and weight ranking for nine whale species
Switch between reported length and weight values from NOAA Fisheries Quick Facts. Source units are standardized to metres and metric tonnes for comparison.
Reported length upper bound · Largest first · 9 species
- 1 Blue whaleBalaenoptera musculus · Baleen whale 33.5 m
- 2 Fin whaleBalaenoptera physalus · Baleen whale 25.9 m
- 3 Bowhead whaleBalaena mysticetus · Baleen whale 18.9 m
- 4 Sei whaleBalaenoptera borealis · Baleen whale 18.3 m
- 5 Humpback whaleMegaptera novaeangliae · Baleen whale 18.3 m
- 6 Sperm whalePhyseter macrocephalus · Toothed whale 15.8 m
- 7 North Atlantic right whaleEubalaena glacialis · Baleen whale 15.8 m
- 8 Gray whaleEschrichtius robustus · Baleen whale 14.9 m
- 9 Minke whaleBalaenoptera acutorostrata · Baleen whale 10.7 m
The blue whale is about 3.1 times the minke whale by the reported length values, and about 16.5 times by the reported weight comparison values.
Length uses exactly 1 ft = 0.3048 m. Weight uses 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 U.S. ton = 0.90718474 metric tonnes. Values are rounded to one decimal place only for display.
For ranges, the upper end is used. “About” and “up to” values remain approximate. These are comparison values, not averages or records for one individual.
